2006-2007 Piedmont PFHA Candidates
Robbie Davis
Candidate for President
I have been a member of Piedmont since 1985 when Chris, my husband, and I were first introduced to this wonderful breed through Fred and Edna Moretti. I have shown off and on through the years and have volunteered for Piedmont as show secretary, secretary, treasurer (3 terms), Password editor, Futurity chair and a number of odd jobs to fill in as needed. I have agreed to run for President for the upcoming term. I look forward to meeting those of you whom I do not know and working with ALL of you. We are a volunteer organization and we will need the volunteers to fill various positions and help us operate. We have had great success with the trail rides, shows, youth programs….many thanks to the board and committee chairs: Milda Minter, Lynn Gallup, Rita Magaha, Lauri Pistolis, Ann Furr, Shaw Laney, Candace Link, Bill Kerns, Dwight Graber, Kathy Williams, Ingrid Ruppalt, Jeanne Griggs, Lori West, Marcia Carrico and the many other volunteers that help out to keep us running smoothly!

I would like to build on the programs that the previous board has started and expanded – shows, trail rides, open show high points, clinics, marketing, newsletter etc. We have a WONDERFUL organization! Please contact me with any ideas that you have and would like to see Piedmont implement. Email: ElPorvenir@aol.com or by phone 704-895-4071.

Rita P. Magaha
Candidate for Vice President

Rita Magaha, wife, mother and grandmother, has been riding, training, showing and selling Paso Fino horses since 1982. Rita has been a member of Piedmont and the National Association continuously since 1982. She and her husband, Mac, were show chairmen for the Asheville, N.C. show for nine years beginning the year that it opened. She was co-chairman or chairman for four National shows; 1985, 1987, 1990 and 1992. While actively training, riding and showing she still found time to serve on the National Board in the capacity as Secretary and Vice-President. In Piedmont, Rita has served in many positions on the board and helped in many areas of the shows. In more recent years she has served the Asheville show by coordinating the vendors and Piedmont by serving as Secretary. Rita has expressed the willingness to continue to serve on the Board and would like to be elected as Vice-President. She pledges to work closely with the Show Chairmen and assist them in the tremendous job that they have volunteered to do.

Robbyn Young
Candidate for Secretary
I became involved with Paso Fino horses at the age of 5, and began showing at the age of 8 and haven't stopped since. The Paso Fino has become a lifelong passion, which has afforded me many unique and unforgettable experiences. I was employed as farm and stallion manager for two world reknown Paso Fino breeding farms in Florida, where I was responsible for client relations, stallion breeding sales and management, horse sales, farm marketing, book keeping and daily farm activities. Later I was employed as marketing director for an International Paso Fino Magazine, where I was responsible for new client sales, ad design, article material, editting, and international marketing. I relocated to North Carolina two years ago, and am now managing partner of Infinite Equine Solutions, a Paso Fino training and marketing business located at El Cardenal Farm in Mooresville, NC. We currently manage 30 Paso Fino horses for show, trail, breeding and sale. I am a licensed Certified Judge with the Paso Fino Horse Association, and most recently was an Assistant Coach for Team USA at the Youth Mundial.

Bill Kerns
Candidate for Treasurer

I have been a member of the PPFHA Board of Directors for the past three years and served as Chairperson for the Carolina Classic the past two years. My background includes the ownership of a property management firm that managed over 20,000 condominium/homeowner association units in South Florida for over 25 years. I have also served on several not for profit boards and most recently served as the Finance Chairperson for the Transylvania Vocational Services organization. I believe very strongly in maintaining a sound financial reporting process and I look forward to further serving our association as Treasurer.

Lori West
Candidate for Director
Lori has enjoyed owning Paso Fino horses since 2001. Raised in Athens , Georgia , Lori has a B.S. in Pharmacy from the University of Georgia . Lori is the volunteer News Coordinator for the Paso Fino Horse World column, as well as a member of the PFHA Communications Committee. Showing horses is a full time commitment for Lori, who also enjoys trail riding, clinics, and raising Paso Fino horses. Opportunities to learn more about riding and the horses, as well as encouraging and helping those new to the breed are favorite pastimes. Lori also enjoys time spent with their Labrador Retrievers and Newfoundland , playing fetch in the pond. Lori’s true love is time spent with horses and shared with her husband, Greg. Lori and Greg reside in Leicester , NC , with 24 acres known as Echo West Farm.

Piedmont Open Horse Show Report
"That was the nicest class of Paso Finos that I have ever judged!" That was the comment of an obviously impressed judge at the Open Show at Camp Croft on October 21st and what a fine sampling of the breed it
was. From Performance to Pleasure the judge and the crowd were treated to some beautiful Paso "eye candy"!

Many thanks to Shaw Laney for supporting Piedmont's Open Show program by bringing four fabulous horses and three lovely ladies to ride them. Everyone is still talking about Shaw's ride on Paul Mercer's beautiful black Dommino and the judge acknowledged quality with first and second place ribbons. Brandy Laney did an outstanding job taking second and third places on Gallano del Bosque. I'm sure some lucky new owner will appreciate the great training and excellent manners of this horse. Angel Dawson came all the way from Asheville and made a perfect Paso picture with her horse Callalilly who took first place in the first class. Arleen Clungle and Catalina showed rock solid consistency with third place finishes. It was great to see how smooth speed can be from Janet Ladd's beautiful Marco, and Eddie Velazquez on Danilito showed all the thrill of the controlled animation of a performence horse. The surprizing and sweet story of the show was Darrell Henderson on Huitan. Although it was their very first time in the ring they managed to look like they were born there while rightfully proud owners Don and Ann McKinney and their daughter Karen lovingly looked on.

The Open Show program for 2007 has already begun with regular and double pointed fun shows running through November. Please don't miss this economical opportunity to show our breed to the public, improve your skills and those of your horse, all while making new friends and having lots of fun!

NC State Fair Horse Show Report
The NC State Fair Paso Fino Show is always a fun show for good fellowship and new horses and riders to get their feet wet too to the showring. For 2006 the show was held on Monday October 16th. This is the first show for Piedmont's new 2007 point show year if you want to start getting points for Piedmont High Point Awards. There was 81 entries registered for the morning and afternoon sessions. Evening session showed 71 entries, which also included intermixed in classes Arabians and Draft horses. There were 67 Paso Fino Horses entered (10 less than 2005).

There were entries in all classes this year except for Bella Formas Gelding 3 & under class; that includes entries in Versatility, Western, Trail, Driving and Costume. Our Piedmont Youth rode a prestigious Flag ceremony in front of the one of the largest non-Paso Fino crowd of spectators I have seen for the 6pm evening show. It was very well received by the crowd with applause! See the fair photos in the Gallery.

Piedmont exhibitor Robbyn Young summed up her first time NC State Fair experience:

We had an awesome time at the Fair show, we will definately plan on attending every year! I tell you what, I've been showing horses for almost 20 years, and I've never had such a huge enthusiastic crowd! It was so refreshing to see the crowd cheering for every horse as it passed over the board (not just clients or a lone owner - don't be shy you know it's been you before!) I loved hearing the comments on how beautiful the horses were and "wow - they are smooth" as you rode by - this is what horse showing is all about, and this is what we need to do to promote the Paso Fino! We took 8 horses and came home with 4 Championships - Fino Champion and Performance A/O Champion, 2 Reserve Championships - Performance A/O and our youth rider Jordan Irvan racked up the blues! We even got Ernie to show our Fino A/O Mare Mistica! We had the best time!!!

Piedmont exhibitor Lori West states with enthusiasm:

Greg and I have attended the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh, NC for the past two years. Though it is a 5-hour drive and only a one day show, it is totally worth it. Showing Paso Finos in a relaxed, fair atmosphere is alot of fun! Each year, we exhibit horses to crowds of horse people, some who have never even heard of Paso Finos. Notice I said crowds...now that's a new experience at a Paso Fino show! The evening events were full of spectators. We had the delight of sharing about the Paso Fino breed to several people, and putting people in contact with Paso Fino farms near them. One lady from England was overwhelmed with fascination about the breed, and just couldn't wait to find out more. A retired couple from the Wake Forest area approached us at the exit gate and was also very interested in the breed. It's a unparalleled opportunity to promote the Paso Fino horse to our perfect market...people that already enjoy horses but are looking for something smoother to ride.

The NC State Fair is a very inexpensive show, with entry fees at $24 per class (not per judge) and it was a two-judge, USEF show this past year. There are money paybacks for every class, with first and second place paying back more than the entry fees in the regular classes, and championship classes pay back $50, $40, $30, $20, and $10 for the top placements...what a deal! We enjoyed the parade of flags by our Paso Fino youth, and the organ music and clapping of the audience. State Fairs are great places to enjoy our Paso Finos and sell horses (though we didn't sell any there, there was alot of interest and contacts were made). Besides the horse show, the fair is a fun place to enjoy with family...it's a fair! Rides, games, exhibits, petting zoos, and food. Funnel cakes, frozen cheesecake dipped in chocolate on a stick, and BBQ are three more reasons I enjoy showing Paso Finos at the State Fair. Ali and Paul Kasey graciously provided a traditional NC BBQ exhibitors dinner on Sunday night, which was delicious!!

Piedmont Youth exhibitor Laura Orr adds: The state fair show was awesome!!! It's always really fun and relaxed, and a great way to get qualified for the show year early. My sister and I both rode and we had a great time!!

Local Piedmont exhibitor Lynn Gallup tells some history of her fair experience:

The Paso Finos started with an exhibition at the NC State Fair Horse Show in 1975. I saw them there that year (first year I was introduced to Paso Finos) and Charles Minter, Sr. was exhibiting his beautiful palomino stallion Siboney LaCE. In 1976, note (20 YEARS AGO) was the first year Paso finos had classes at the NC State Fair Show in the outdoor arena on the main show grounds across form the race track. Often a motor car race would be happening at the same time we would be showing. Also the fireworks in the evening would go off over the showgrounds while the horses would still be showing. The show would stop until they would be finished.

We have had a Paso Fino show every year since then (1976), with numbers dwindling to a low once of 25 horses to a high last year of 77 horses. We have gone from having 1 judge to now having 2 judges. We have had our shows on Monday, Wednesday and Sunday. Having the show on the weekend last Sunday of the fair didn't draw more entries that year, actually less. Monday seems to work well, and we get a good turnout of spectators too. Exhibitors come in the night before. (In reality, you wouldn't want to get in rush hour traffic during the week am or pm drive) in Raleigh with a horse trailer. We now have around 50 Paso Fino classes offered.

The fair allowed Piedmont to perform with a Paso Fino Parade of Flags in 2005, organized by Ali Casey. All it took was a suggestion to do this to the fair committee. The NC State Fair has been very good to the Paso Fino. Our largest class in 2006 had 11 entries in Pleasure Mare; last year it was14 entries in Pleasure Youth. Ali Casey and Flat Rock Farm has helped exhibitors feel welcome upon arrival Sunday evening by hosting a delicious barbeque dinner.

It takes a team of dedicated volunteers with ideas and planning, AND exhibitors who love to show off their beautiful Paso Fino horses to a crowd of interested spectators all to make it a success! Gorgeous fall weather is always a plus for fair atmosphere! I sure did see alot of smiles on folks riding at this show...they were having fun!!!

If you have suggestions or comments for the 2007 fair, email them to Lynn Gallup info@gracewoodpasos.com to discuss at the December/January Fair Advisory meeting with show management.

PFHA Top 10 Sire News
Ponderosa Coloso has finished in the number five position on the prestigious Top Ten Sire list for 2006. Team Coloso has rallied around this great stallion's offspring following his passing in December 2005 proving his legacy will continue for many years to come. Congratulations to Paul "Woody" Mercer, Bill Minter and all the members of Team Coloso on this accomplishment!

Salute to Ponderosa Coloso! Team Coloso came away from the National Show in Perry Ga. with heads held high following another great nationals. Coloso's Musica backed up her 2005 Grand National Pleasure Championship with the Reserve Grand in 2006 ridden by Shaw Laney. Other highlights were in the Bella Forma Fillies/Mares classes during the week with a sweep in the yearling and Breeders Sweepstakes classes by Coloso's Mia as National Champion. Team Coloso also swept these classes in 2004 and 2005. Both the National and Reserve National titles were obtained in two year old fillies. Coloso's Serafina won the Reserve National title in three year olds and was the third place Grand National Champion in the finals. The mares division was very tough as always with third and fifth National Champion ribbons being awarded. Specialty classes were also good as Ponderosa Coloso won the Get of Sire class for the fifth time in a row. Also congratulations on the National and Reserve National titles in Produce of Dam for the second straight year. ... Dwayne Tilley

Have you got a Paso Fino horse to sell or a stallion at stud and need to get the word out to people who might be interested? Doing a search where www.piedmontpasofino.org would be ranked when typing in the key words: "paso fino horses NC" came up with excellent ranking results in the Internet's top search engines. MSN had it listed as 3rd on page 1, Google had it listed as 5th on page 1, and Altavista had it listed as 12th and still on page one. Considering Piedmont doesn't pay for any priority listings, these are exceptional results. Many surfers will not go past the first page in doing hits. Southern States still gives Piedmont money back on every feed bag coupon that is sent in and for bulk deliveries, which supports the Piedmont Futurity. If you feed "bag" feed, please take the time to clip the coupon (in dotted lines) off the back of each bag. Piedmont gets $.25 for Legends or Equitech bag and $.10 for every Reliance bag coupon submitted. Piedmont also gets credit for 50 lb. for bulk deliveries, so save the pink weight slip. All coupons and weight tickets can be turned in any time to Milda Minter, by mailing or giving them to her at any Piedmont event. Thank you for taking the time to support the Futurity through this program.

Piedmont PFHA and Country Supply
Recently I was ordering supplies from Country Supply online and discovered that they have a "donation program" called Country Care, which donates a portion of a customer's payment to a non-profit group of the customer's choosing. So, I signed up the Piedmont Futurity as the non-profit group we can contribute to. We will get up to 5% of purchases back (excluding dewormers and shipping costs), much like a Discover Card gives cash back.

In order to participate, all you have to do is make an order with www.countrysupply.com and after you put in your credit card information, you will see a box for "Country Care Code." In this box you should type Piedmont Futurity" written without a space between words. Country Supply will tally our corresponding purchases and send us a check monthly to benefit the futurity program.

Any of you who have shopped through Country Supply probably know that their prices on grooming supplies, barn tools and supplies, and horse care items are the best around. Please consider using them if possible and remember to type "Piedmont Futurity" as your Country Care Code. Pass this along to any of your friends who shop for horse supplies and ask them to help us out by shopping at Country Supply.
Many thanks, Milda Minter

PFHA Trail Ride Calendar

The Trail Ride Calendar for 2006 includes all our favorite places to ride, plus a few new and exciting additions. Our goal is to offer rides in different areas of our Region so that all our membership can participate. Suggestions for locations are always welcome, so if you have a favorite place you would like to see us ride, please let me know so it can be added to our Calendar. Your trail ride chairman and trail bosses are planning wonderful rides all around the region. Our attempt is to have one ride per month.

We are putting together a clinic on trail safety, trail training, and competitive trail riding. For those that are new to our Association, we try to offer rides to accommodate the needs of all our riders. Trails are selected for location and terrain that is geared toward the gaited horse. To ensure the enjoyment of all the riders, Trail Hosts generally lead two groups, those that prefer a slower pace and one for those that prefer a faster pace. The main goal is to arrive for lunch at the same time to enjoy fellowship with other riders.

The Trail Hosts listed on the Calendar of Events have graciously accepted the responsibility for leading rides at locations they often ride. If you plan to participate in that ride, you will need to contact the Host so they can obtain a head count for the ride and food. Some rides are in locations where food is not nearby and will require you to pack a lunch. If the ride requires a packed lunch, your Trail Host will inform you to bring your lunch, a dish for potluck, or tell you food is provided.

If you plan to participate in a Piedmont Ride you must be a Piedmont member. Membership is an insurance requirement for designated Piedmont Rides. For non-members and/or members that may have guests that want to come ride, we do offer a one-time Trail Ride Membership for $10.00 per person You must contact the host with your name(s) of the people riding and a telephone number where you can be reached. Your Trail Host will need this information to verify your membership and so you can be contacted in the event the ride has to be cancelled due to weather or other reasons.

Trail Etiquette
Be a courteous trail rider. If you horse kicks, please tie a red ribbon its tail so others will know to stay clear. If you are riding a stallion, please ride in front of the group so as not to annoy mares. Do not run up on horses from behind trying to catch up or take off in front without warning those around you first. Pay attention to your Trail Host instructions! Remember, you are there to make sure everyone has a good safe ride.

Ideas for Trail Ride Involvement
If you know the trails at the host location, offer to help your Trail Host lead a group. Often we have those that prefer to go slow or are on a young horse and prefer a smaller group. Also, if we have more than 10 horses, it is nice to split into smaller groups to ride and meet back at an allotted time and location. Coordinate with you Host to help lead a group.

Offer to help with food: Not everyone rides or prefers to ride as long as the trail may be. If you are a short-ride person, or a non-rider who has tagged along to enjoy the day, ask your host what you can do while the others are riding, volunteer to set up tables, pick up ice, drinks and food.

Things you need to bring: Lawn chairs. Shovel and/or poop-scooper. Leave no trace at all facilities so we may continue to ride there.

We have some new and exciting places to ride this year. Hope to see you there. Happy Trails!
Candace Link, Trail Ride Coordinator, (336) 940-2936 pasolink@msn.com.

PFHA Trail Rides
If you know of any trail rides your region is sponsoring, tell your region you want them submitted to the PFHA. If they are submitted to the PFHA they will be listed on the web site, in the magazine, on E-News and in Association information packets for FREE. That means more people will attend and if you would like to participate in other trail programs provided by the PFHA (Ticket to Ride, Pleasure Trail, Endurance Trail, Competitive Trail) you can use these rides as sanctioned trail rides.

Trail Riding Buddies
If anyone would like to be a Riding Buddy, or if you want a Buddy to ride in a Park you are interested in exploring, please let us know! Ticket to Ride PFHA Program
The Ticket to Ride is completely free to participate in for PFHA members. Members will complete a "ticket", which can be downloaded from the PFHA website or requested by contacting PFHA. Once the ticket is complete it is returned to the PFHA to be eligible for drawings that will take place at the Grand National Championship Show. You do not have to be present to win. You must be a member of the PFHA at the time of all rides and at the time of the drawings.

A member can complete as many tickets as they wish. The more tickets a member completes the better their chances are for the drawing. The tickets will be held at the PFHA until time for the drawings. The ticket has five spaces to have completed before the ticket can be returned to the PFHA. Every time you participate in a PFHA sanctioned trail ride it will count for two rides. A non PFHA sanctioned ride is worth one ride. You may use organized trail rides (must have a Ride Manager and be advertised) or any other event you participate in with your registered Paso Fino. Backyard pleasure riding/exercising can not be used for the Ticket to Ride program. Have the ride manager initial the spaces and sign off on the back of the ticket.

Last year we had Pasos shown in the Cross Rails class, a couple of the English Equitation classes (a few first places there by the way!), Pole Bending and Barrel Racing. However, classes 19 and 21 (which are Saddle seat classes) are the two that are predominantly, some months exclusively Paso Fino now! It really is a great show for beginners, students, as a "dress rehearsal" show for young or green horses, or a fun and inexpensive way to show in a very relaxed, family atmosphere! We hope to see lots of Piedmont Paso Finos at the next how! ...Jeanne Griggs

USEF News

USEF Safe Rule Changes at Recognized Competitions

Lexington, KY - Consistent with one of the primary missions of the United States Equestrian Federation, which is to ensure the safety and welfare of both horses and riders, two important rule changes were approved at the annual meeting of the Board of Directors held in Louisville, Kentucky on January 16th, 2005. These changes should significantly contribute to safety at recognized USEF competitions. They involve the operation of motorized vehicles on horse show grounds by minors and the standards for safety helmets to be used in jumping competitions.

The first change was to rule GR301.5.a. The Board voted that beginning April 1st, 2005 minors who do not have a valid driver’s license which allows them to operate a motorized vehicle in the state in which they reside, will not be permitted to operate a motorized vehicle on the grounds of a recognized competition. This includes, but is not limited to, golf carts, motorcycles, scooters and farm utility vehicles. Penalties may include exclusion of the child, parents, guardians, and/or trainers from the competition grounds for the remainder of the competition and charges being filed against any of these individuals in accordance with Chapter VI. (Wheelchairs and other mobility assistance equipment for people with disabilities are exempt.)
The second rule change unanimously passed by the Board was GR318 which pertains to the use of approved safety helmets by everyone, juniors and seniors, competing over fences.
The Paso Fino Horse Association requested that the Board add to this rule that approved helmets be worn in all Paso Fino classes requiring jumping, and by all sub-juniors (exhibitors under 12 years of age) at all times when riding on the competition grounds of a Paso Fino show. The Board approved this addition.

Horse Health Awareness. Protect your horse from diseases like Rabies (spread by wild animals, vaccinate once a year); Sleeping Sickness/EEE (spread by mosquitoes, vaccinate twice a year); West Nile Virus (spread by mosquitoes, vaccinate twice a year).

Interstate Health Permit
Horse owners who frequently travel out of state with their animals for horse shows and festivals can take advantage of a new agreement between the Southern states that will eliminate the need to obtain monthly animal Health Certificates. The agreement between Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia will allow horse owners to apply for an Equine Event Permit that will be good for up to six months in any of the listed states. Some states had reciprocal agreements in the past, but this is the first agreement of its kind in the South.

To receive a permit, North Carolina horse owners must send proof of negative Coggins test and Certificate of Veterinary Inspection along with an application and a $5 processing fee for each animal to the NC State Veterinarian. Owners must also submit proof of permanent identification, which includes tattoos, brands, microchips or digital photos showing the left and right sides, as well as a frontal view, of the horse. The issued permit will be good for six months, unless the Coggins test expires beforehand. Owners will still be required to carry the Coggins information and original Health Certificate with them when they travel. Owners will also be required to travel with a microchip reader if the equine is identified by microchip.
The application and more information about the Permit can be downloaded at the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Veterinary Division website, www.ncagr.com/vet/ or by calling (919) 733-7601.
