From
The Piedmont PFHA President
Dear Members and Friends,
Thanks to all of you who came to Valerie Fox’s El Escondite
Farm on November 5 for our Piedmont Meeting and Awards Banquet.
The atmosphere was casual and fun and over 100 members participated
in the meeting and election. I appreciate each of you who
offered suggestions or comments during the meeting. Congratulations
to Shaw Laney, who was elected to begin a Piedmont Board of
Director’s position on January 1, 2006, for a three-year
term. I thank wholeheartedly Randy Williams, who stepped into
a vacated position last year and has filled it admirably.
It is wonderful to see some new faces becoming involved in
the management of our region’s activities and new members
joining our region.
Congratulations to the many High Point Award winners, who
were awarded beautiful silver trays for open, amateur, and
specialty classes and silver photo albums or frames for the
youth classes.
The by-law changes that were proposed all passed. Beginning
with the election in the fall of 2006, Piedmont will have
it’s normal 4 officers, a separate national delegate,
and 4 directors, making a total nine-member board of directors.
The 2006 election will involve all but two of the director
positions. Officers will also at that time begin their terms
immediately upon election. Thanks to our director Ann Furr
for coordinating this massive effort of handling and counting
ballots. I encourage any of you who may wish to run for office
to become more involved during this next year, attend all
the meetings, and generally understand the dynamics of our
region. In addition to the board members, we have several
important committees who coordinate all of our activities
and programs.
Thanks to Jeanne Griggs, we have an outline for a Fun Show
Circuit Awards Program which we will be discussing at the
January membership meeting and hope to implement beginning
February 1. This will be a High Point program for open shows
and our own Paso Fino fun shows, basically any shows that
are not pointed through the PFHA. This will be an incentive
for more members to show their horses in these venues where
we are not just showing to ourselves and where we can promote
the breed. Similarly, we will have a program to recognize
our avid trail riders through accumulation of time spent in
the saddle through any non-show activity, with awards given
as hour milestones are reached. We hope that these programs
will broaden the appeal and the interest in Piedmont PFHA
and promote the enjoyment of our horses even more.
Some Piedmont members took the time to answer the surveys
from the September issue of the Password. Director Randy Williams
compiled the data which we are using to plan our 2006 event
year and pick our show judges. This data indicated that our
members wish to stay with the Clemson show arena, although
you do want to try other locations such as Tryon, Camden,
and N. Augusta. Our members are receptive to having a joint
show with adjoining regions but want to keep the Asheville
show in the same format as the 2005 show. Thanks to those
of you who took the time to complete your surveys. Based on
your feedback we are planning a special version of the Clemson
show for April 14-15, 2006, since April 16 is Easter Sunday.
Note that the Asheville show has been moved to the fourth
weekend in June (its original dates) which will be June 21-25,
2006, which will put us two weeks away from the Lexington,
VA, show hosted by Mason-Dixon Region.
I would like to take this time to thank all the people who
have supported me and helped me during this past year as your
Piedmont PFHA President. Our region is really for and about
the members and I strive to remember and practice that at
all times. I look forward to another successful and safe year
for our members and our region. Best wishes to you all for
a wonderful holiday season and safe travels wherever you may
go.
Sincerely,
Milda Minter

promotion with expansion of the Piedmont exhibit booth to
include a breed stall at the Southern Horse Festival in December.
Additionally print display ads promoting Piedmont activities,
Piedmont Paso Finos, and Piedmont farms are being planned
for regional equine publications, such as The Saltblock
Gazette and Southeast Equine. We have designated
areas with Piedmont members to work on marketing in those
areas, such as (1) central Charlotte/Triad area of NC, (2)
western Asheville NC/SC, (3) central/eastern Raleigh, NC (4)
central/eastern SC. If you would like to help out in one of
these areas, let either Lynn Gallup or Milda Minter know.
We also look forward to hearing your marketing ideas for Paso
Finos and Piedmont.

Piedmont
PFHA's Exhibit wins 3rd Place at the Southern Horse Festival
2005
Southern Horse Festival Photo Gallery
From December 2nd-4th, 2005 the Southern Horse Festival drew horse
fanciers from near and far across North Carolina, to the NC State
Fairgrounds in Raleigh, NC. There were many equine demonstrations
and also educational seminars over the dourse of the three days.
Piedmont PFHA had an exhibit booth space and a breed stall to show
off the Paso Fino horse. This will be the second year Piedmont has
an exhibit. This was the first year in judging the breed exhibits
and Piedmont won 3rd place. Jeany Hicks, Kerry Wachtman, Ali Casey,
Milda Minter, Donna, Ashley and Bryant Brooks, and Lynn Gallup helped
greet visitors to the Piedmont exhibit over the three days. Piedmont's
exhibit was very festive with red drapery with holiday greenery
and white twinkly lights. Piedmont's new photo display board showed
lots of great pictures of the many advantages and talents of Paso
Finos. In the Piedmont stall, Milda Minter had brought her beautiful
black three-year-old National Junior Youth Champion
filly
to greet visitors and provide three Paso Fino demonstrations! In
the final demonstration of the show, the Parade of Breeds on Sunday
afternoon, Milda and her black filly brought the rest of the Parade
to a stand still to watch her make her "parade pass",
and then was the only horse breed to draw applause from the audience
after their ride around the Dorton Arena. Salute to the Paso Finos!

NC State Fair Paso Fino Show Report
NC
State Fair Photo Gallery
Seventy-seven Paso Finos exhibited at the NC State Fair October
17th in Raleigh, NC. This was seven more horses then in 2004. Exhibitors
took advantage of the low entry fees, double USEF points, two judges
and paybacks for every class. Showing horses at the NC State Fair
was an enjoyable and fun experience for many Piedmont members.
With funnel cakes and chocolate dipped cheesecake on a stick, the
horse show was a festive atmosphere with plenty of observers. The
barns were nice, and there were several warm up arenas, including
a covered one adjoining the main arena. Exhibitors enjoyed the warm
water at the wash racks for their horses, with the fall temperatures
nipping at us after the sun went down.
This year we had a Parade of Flags at the 6pm evening start time
with the USA, NC and PFHA flags. The stands were 2/3 full of interested
fair goers and spectators at the 6pm evening opening ceremonies!
The Youth Pleasure Class had the most entries per class with 14
horses. Way to go, to our enthusiastic youth exhibitors! With the
great turnout we had this year, we may be able to have a day change
to the weekend next year.
Also, our NC State Fair horse show USEF steward Mr. Fred Moretti
was inducted into into the N.C. State Fair Livestock Hall of Fame
(for the horse category) during the Paso Fino show by N.C. Agriculture
Commissioner Steve Troxler. This award honors a person's considerable
contributions to Fair livestock and horse shows.
The NC State Fair Advisory meeting for the 2006
show is scheduled for December 12th in Raleigh,
NC. If you have comments, please email them to Lynn Gallup by December
10th, 2005 to lynngallup@gracewoodpasos.com.
Piedmont
Trail Ride Reports
The day did not look promising on October 22nd for the Latta
Plantation Ride. However, all clouds lifted and blew away
for a beautiful sunny day. Piedmont members, Patrisha & Bill
Norman, Sue Yearwood, Keith Siler, Tony Casagrande, Ann & Micah
Furr and Trail Leader, Candace Link, were in attendance. Latta Plantation
has made many improvements. All trails have been widened and marked
with color-coded trail markers for ease in finding your way.. All
boggy places have been reworked with tile and culverts and gravel
base has been spread on all trails. The gravel does make it a place
where shoes are necessary; however, by Spring it is anticipated
that the trail base will be settled, which will make it the perfect
place to ride.
November 12th was a picture perfect day for the Salem
Lake Ride. Piedmont members Sue & Tom Yearwood from
Roxboro, Joe & Eileen Wilhem from Pinnacle, Connie & Debbie
Wolkowicz from Ronks, PA, Connie, Keith & Stephanie Syler from
Advance, Milda, Christina & Morgan Minter from Lexington and
Don & Joy Posey from Hickory were in attendance. We all squeezed
our rigs into the parking lot and saddled up for the seven mile
loop ride around Salem Lake. The sky was Carolina Blue and we enjoyed
mild temperatures. Homemade chili was provided by Trail Ride Coordinator,
Candace Link.
We have had a very successful year on the Trail. All rides were
well attended; fellowship and food were enjoyed by all. Trail rides
for the 2006 season will include some of the old favorite places
along with the addition of some new possibilities such as Clemson,
Cane Creek, South Mountain, Moss Foundation and Sand Hills State
Forest. If you have a suggestion for a ride or you would like to
volunteer to be a Trail Ride Host for a specific ride in a Park
you frequently ride in, please contact Candace Link, Trail Ride
Coordinator at (336) 940-2936 or email: pasolink@msn.com
Piedmont
Awards Banquet and Meeting held at El Escondite
Valerie Fox welcomed us to her beautiful farm, El Escondite, on
November 5th for a casual and fun awards banquet and meeting. Several
members enjoyed the unseasonably warm weather by trail riding before
the event. Several budding artists, including Hannah Reid and Ashley
Aldred, entertained us with karaoke after the dinner.
Paso
Fino Test-Rides were #1 at Gracewood Farm's Open House
Over 35 people from the greater Raleigh, NC area attended the Gracewood
Farm Open House on Sunday, November 13 in New Hill, NC. Many were
new to the breed and enjoyed the Paso Fino horses. One guest said:
"The ride was a first for me on a gaited horse and I loved
it! It is such a different ride and how smooth!" Larry Revels
from the Saltblock Gazette came to cover the event and took lots
of photos. Of course, this rodeo cowboy had to ride a Paso Fino
for the first time, but it was no rodeo. Larry was anxious to try
out the "sounding board" and just loved it...the sound
of the Paso Fino beat. Saltblock Gazette is a new equine newspaper
and a January 2006 Stallion special edition is planned. Visit them
at http://www.saltblockgazette.com.
Demonstrations were given by Lynn Gallup on La Sombra BLS, on Novia
Dulce de Gracia with "bridleless riding", and with Emperador
La Estrella showing the natural Paso Fino gait on a lunge line,
Bella Forma two lines, and also under saddle. Paso Fino test-riders
ages ranged from five years to 60-something, and they all enjoyed
the smooth ride!

this prestigious international competition.
Union
County Barn Tour Report
In October a group of riders and their horses set out from Chetola
Farms to participate in Union County’s Barn Tour and Parade
of Breeds. They took five horses who demonstrated the variety of
Paso Fino styles, including pleasure, performance and fino. The
crowd was impressed with the versatility, manners and beauty of
each and every horse. The youngest rider, 6 year old Micah Furr,
dressed as a gun-toting cowgirl, rode her horse, Rose, and stole
the show. Her brother, Christopher and Brittain Williams rode side
by side, showing the talents of their mounts, a performance stallion
and a fino mare. Afterwards the crowd was very complimentary of
the horses and several onlookers plan to try a Paso Fino in the
near future. What a great way to market our breed!

The
St. Jude's Children's Hospital Fundraiser Report
The St. Jude's Children's Hospital fundraiser Nov 12th at Fantasia
Farms was a delight! Lauri Pistolis did a great job of organizing
the fundraiser and getting local businesses to donate items to raffle
and auction. Her boarders volunteered their day to help, making
it a true family affair. Paso Fino enthusiasts from as far away
as Mississippi and Pennsylvania came to participate in this worthwile
fundraiser, and to exhibit their horses to an eager and receptive
crowd. Several Paso Finos found new homes due to the exhibitions.
Face painting, pony rides, hay rides, food and refreshment, a used
tack sale, raffles for prizes, and a silent auction for donated
items were enjoyed by a large crowd from the Charlotte area. We
enjoyed lunch and the horse demos sitting on hay bales, laughing,
and chatting with the crowd. Thank you, Lauri and Dennis, for a
fun day and the opportunity to share our Paso Finos with such a
nice group of interested folks. Jeff Williams, www.williamsphotography.photoreflect.com,
took some nice photos of the day and is donating their use to Piedmont,
asking only for photo credits. The following link should take you
right to the images taken at the St. Judes event on Nov. 12th.
"What a day to remember....I would like to thank all of you
that helped me to make this event, one of the best! I believe we
succeeded in not only raising over $3000.00 for such an incredible
cause, but I think we definately educated hundreds of people who
would have never know what a Paso Fino was!
Williams photography was there and captured it all on film...he
will be forwarding a disc so we can use these pictures on the website,
newsletters, etc. Again, Thank you all so much for everything!"

Piedmont's
Website Ranks High in the Top Search Engines
Have you got a Paso Fino horse to sell or a stallion at
stud and need to get the word out to people who might be interested?
Doing a search where www.piedmontpasofino.org would be ranked when
typing in the key words: "paso fino horses NC" came up
with excellent ranking results in the Internet's top search engines.
MSN had it listed as 3rd on page 1, Google had it listed as 5th
on page 1, and Altavista had it listed as 12th and still on page
one. Considering Piedmont doesn't pay for any priority listings,
these are exceptional results. Many surfers will not go past the
first page in doing hits. Piedmont's website fell on the first page
of these widely used search engines. Now
is the time to get your Piedmont website classified ads in for the
next month. The ads stay online for an entire year.
Don't miss out on this Internet advertising opportunity. The rates
are very cost competitive compared to other horse sites. See
Piedmont's advertising page for rate
information and submit your Internet ads. There are members
and non-member rates.

Southern
States Feed Program
Southern States still gives Piedmont money back on every feed bag
coupon that is sent in and for bulk deliveries, which supports the
Piedmont Futurity. If you feed "bag" feed, please take
the time to clip the coupon (in dotted lines) off the back of each
bag. Piedmont gets $.25 for Legends or Equitech
bag and $.10 for every Reliance bag coupon submitted. Piedmont
also gets credit for 50 lb. for bulk deliveries, so save the pink
weight slip. All coupons and weight tickets can be turned in any
time to Milda Minter, by mailing or giving them to her at any Piedmont
event. Thank you for taking the time to support the Futurity through
this program.

PFHA and Country Supply
Recently I was ordering supplies from Country Supply
online and discovered that they have a "donation program"
called Country Care, which donates a portion of a customer's payment
to a non-profit group of the customer's choosing. So, I signed up
the Piedmont Futurity as the non-profit group we can contribute
to. We will get up to 5% of purchases back (excluding dewormers
and shipping costs), much like a Discover Card gives cash back.
In order to participate, all you have to do is make
an order with www.countrysupply.com
and after you put in your credit card information, you will see
a box for "Country Care Code." In this
box you should type PiedmontFuturity" written
without a space between words. Country Supply will tally our corresponding
purchases and send us a check monthly to benefit the futurity program.
Any of you who have shopped through Country Supply
probably know that their prices on grooming supplies, barn tools
and supplies, and horse care items are the best around. Please consider
using them if possible and remember to type "PiedmontFuturity"
as your Country Care Code. Pass this along to any of your friends
who shop for horse supplies and ask them to help us out by shopping
at Country Supply.
Many thanks, Milda Minter

NEW
Leatherwood Trail Ride
The NC State University Extension Horse Short Course and Clinic
Series flyer lists a trail ride event in Leatherwood for May 20,
2006. This could be a great opportunity to have some Paso Finos
participate in a non-breed specific organized trail ride. Any
interest here? Contact Lori West at lorihwest@yahoo.com.
Piedmont
Trail Ride Requirements
You must be a Piedmont member
or Trail Ride Member, and contact the Trail Ride Host prior to
Trail Ride deadline to participate.
PFHA Trail Ride Calendar
The Trail Ride Calendar for 2005 includes
all our favorite places to ride, plust a few new and exciting
additions. Our goal is to offer rides in different areas of our
Region so that all our membership can participate. Suggestions
for locations are always welcome, so if you have a favorite place
you would like to see us ride, please let me know so it can be
added to our Calendar. Your trail ride chairman and trail bosses
are planning wonderful rides all around the region. Our attempt
is to have one ride per month. We are putting together a clinic
on trail safety, trail training, and competitive trail riding
for later in the year.
For those that are new to
our Association, we try to offer rides to accommodate the needs
of all our riders. Trails are selected for location and terrain
that is geared toward the gaited horse. To ensure the enjoyment
of all the riders, Trail Hosts generally lead two groups, those
that prefer a slower pace and one for those that prefer a faster
pace. The main goal is to arrive for lunch at the same time to enjoy
fellowship with other riders.
The Trail Hosts listed on the Calendar
of Events have graciously accepted the responsibility for leading
rides at locations they often ride. If you plan to participate in
that ride, you will need to contact the Host so they can obtain
a head count for the ride and food. Some rides are in locations
where food is not nearby and will require you to pack a lunch. If
the ride requires a packed lunch, your Trail Host will inform you
to bring your lunch, a dish for potluck, or tell you food is provided.
If you plan to participate in a Piedmont Ride you
must be a Piedmont member. Membership is an insurance requirement
for designated Piedmont Rides. For non-members and/or members that
may have guests that want to come ride, we do offer a one-time Trail
Ride Membership for $10.00 per person You must contact the host
with your name(s) of the people riding and a telephone number where
you can be reached. Your Trail Host will need this information to
verify your membership and so you can be contacted in the event
the ride has to be cancelled due to weather or other reasons.
Trail Etiquette
Be a courteous trail rider. If you horse kicks, please tie a red
ribbon its tail so others will know to stay clear. If you are riding
a stallion, please ride in front of the group so as not to annoy
mares. Do not run up on horses from behind trying to catch up or
take off in front without warning those around you first. Pay attention
to your Trail Host instructions! Remember, you are there to make
sure everyone has a good safe ride.
Ideas
for Trail Ride Involvement
If you know the trails at the host location, offer to help your
Trail Host lead a group. Often we have those that prefer to go slow
or are on a young horse and prefer a smaller group. Also, if we
have more than 10 horses, it is nice to split into smaller groups
to ride and meet back at an allotted time and location. Coordinate
with you Host to help lead a group.
Offer to help with food: Not everyone rides or prefers
to ride as long as the trail may be. If you are a short-ride person,
or a non-rider who has tagged along to enjoy the day, ask your host
what you can do while the others are riding, volunteer to set up
tables, pick up ice, drinks and food.
Things you need to bring: Lawn chairs. Shovel and/or poop-scooper.
Leave no trace at all facilities so we may continue to ride there.
We have some new and exciting places to ride this year. Hope to
see you there. Happy Trails!

PFHA
Trail Ride Calendar
If you know of any trail rides your region is sponsoring, tell your
region you want them submitted to the PFHA. If they are submitted
to the PFHA they will be listed on the web site, in the magazine,
on E-News and in Association information packets for FREE. That
means more people will attend and if you would like to participate
in other trail programs provided by the PFHA (Ticket to Ride, Pleasure
Trail, Endurance Trail, Competitive Trail) you can use these rides
as sanctioned trail rides.

Ticket
to Ride PFHA Program
The Ticket to Ride is completely free to participate
in for PFHA members. Members will complete a "ticket",
which can be downloaded from the PFHA website or requested by contacting
PFHA. Once the ticket is complete it is returned to the PFHA to
be eligible for drawings that will take place at the Grand National
Championship Show. You do not have to be present to win. You must
be a member of the PFHA at the time of all rides and at the time
of the drawings.
A member can complete as many tickets as they wish.
The more tickets a member completes the better their chances are
for the drawing. The tickets will be held at the PFHA until time
for the drawings. The ticket has five spaces to have completed before
the ticket can be returned to the PFHA. Every time you participate
in a PFHA sanctioned trail ride it will count for two rides. A non
PFHA sanctioned ride is worth one ride. You may use organized trail
rides (must have a Ride Manager and be advertised) or any other
event you participate in with your registered Paso Fino. Backyard
pleasure riding/exercising can not be used for the Ticket to Ride
program. Have the ride manager initial the spaces and sign off on
the back of the ticket.

Last year we had Pasos shown in the Cross Rails
class, a couple of the English Equitation classes (a few first
places there by the way!), Pole Bending and Barrel Racing. However,
classes 19 and 21 (which are Saddle seat classes) are the two
that are predominantly, some months exclusively Paso Fino now!
It really is a great show for beginners, students, as
a "dress rehearsal" show for young or green horses,
or a fun and inexpensive way to show in a very relaxed, family
atmosphere! We hope to see lots of Piedmont Paso Finos at the
next how! ...Jeanne Griggs

USEF
Safe Rule Changes at Recognized Competitions
Lexington, KY - Consistent with one of the primary missions of the
United States Equestrian Federation, which is to ensure the safety
and welfare of both horses and riders, two important rule changes
were approved at the annual meeting of the Board of Directors held
in Louisville, Kentucky on January 16th, 2005. These changes should
significantly contribute to safety at recognized USEF competitions.
They involve the operation of motorized vehicles on horse show grounds
by minors and the standards for safety helmets to be used in jumping
competitions.
The first change was to rule GR301.5.a. The Board voted that beginning
April 1st, 2005 minors who do not have a valid driver’s license
which allows them to operate a motorized vehicle in the state in
which they reside, will not be permitted to operate a motorized
vehicle on the grounds of a recognized competition. This
includes, but is not limited to, golf carts, motorcycles,
scooters and farm utility vehicles. Penalties may include
exclusion of the child, parents, guardians, and/or trainers from
the competition grounds for the remainder of the competition and
charges being filed against any of these individuals in accordance
with Chapter VI. (Wheelchairs and other mobility assistance equipment
for people with disabilities are exempt.)
The second rule change unanimously passed by the
Board was GR318 which pertains to the use of approved safety
helmets by everyone, juniors and seniors, competing over fences.
The Paso Fino Horse Association requested that the Board add to
this rule that approved helmets be worn in all Paso Fino classes
requiring jumping, and by all sub-juniors (exhibitors under 12 years
of age) at all times when riding on the competition grounds of a
Paso Fino show. The Board approved this addition.

Interstate
Health Permit
Horse owners who frequently travel out of state with their animals
for horse shows and festivals can take advantage of a new agreement
between the Southern states that will eliminate the need to obtain
monthly animal Health Certificates. The agreement between Alabama,
Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina,
Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia
will allow horse owners to apply for an Equine Event Permit that
will be good for up to six months in any of the listed states. Some
states had reciprocal agreements in the past, but this is the first
agreement of its kind in the South.
To receive a permit, North Carolina horse owners
must send proof of negative Coggins test and Certificate of Veterinary
Inspection along with an application and a $5 processing fee for
each animal to the NC State Veterinarian. Owners must also submit
proof of permanent identification, which includes tattoos, brands,
microchips or digital photos showing the left and right sides, as
well as a frontal view, of the horse. The issued permit will be
good for six months, unless the Coggins test expires beforehand.
Owners will still be required to carry the Coggins information and
original Health Certificate with them when they travel. Owners will
also be required to travel with a microchip reader if the equine
is identified by microchip.
The application and more information about the Permit
can be downloaded at the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer
Services’ Veterinary Division website, www.ncagr.com/vet/
