From The President
The summer seems to be moving fast, with many of our trail rides and our two biggest shows now completed for this year. Still to come are our popular Biltmore ride and others, so look for the information on this page and also on the Events page.

Our first all-youth show is coming in Morristown, TN, July 30-31, with a special concert by country singer Chelsea Cline on Friday evening, July 29. Chelsea just sang for President Bush in June and is an upcoming artist with Jellan Records in Nashville. Both the show and the concert should be great fun so bring your kids and friends. Part of the excitement for the weekend will be the Mundial clinic to help prepare the youth for the 2006 World Cup Show in the US. It's never too early to find out the rules and regulations. Thanks to all the members of Piedmont and surrounding regions who have volunteered to help at this show to keep the costs down for the kids.

Don't forget the one-day show in Columbia, SC, on August 6, which is a good place to fine tune your horse for nationals or get those necessary few points needed to qualify. This show is hosted by the Pure Puerto Rican Association. Since this show is not USEF sanctioned, remember that you will need to show back in championships to get the necessary 20 points to qualify for 2005 nationals. National show premium books are out, so if you have not received yours yet, call the national office and have another one sent.

The Piedmont Classic show in Asheville was again a huge success, with 460 horses entered in the show and well over 400 of them actually showing. The "Dinner in the Dirt" on Saturday evening was well-executed thanks to advance planning and cooperation from the stallion and mare owners/riders who participated. Our idea has been copied by other shows, perhaps the highest form of flattery! We had many out-of-state exhibitors from Texas, Minnesota, Colorado, Massachusetts, Florida, Ohio, and many more states. One amateur class I watched had 4 exhibitors, from Washington, Ohio, West Virginia, and Massachusetts. What a great representation that our show is truly a showcase for some of the best horses and farms in the country! We have received positive feedback that many of the same farms will return next year with even more horses. I personally know of many horses that were sold during the show, so I think the Asheville show stimulates the desire for everyone to get involved and get excited about the show environment. Unfortunately, the judging did not receive such rave reviews, and I applaud the Piedmont members and friends for maintaining the dignity in the arena that our breed deserves, even though many of us were at minimum puzzled and at maximum extremely upset about the quality and "style" of judging displayed. Of course, all the class winners were outstanding horses, it's just that the method of awarding them was unusual at times. Steps have already been taken by some owners and exhibitors to question what happened at Asheville, and I will keep you informed.

Congratulations to Tony Casagrande, who won the 2005 prize of a Silver Star Trailer, simply for being an exhibitor at the show. Special thanks to Dwight and Marla Graber, show chairmen, assisted by Alice Page, 2006 show chairman, and Robin Visceglia, our former president, for putting on such a great show! Thanks to all the other volunteers and exhibitors and owners who supported the show. We had tremendous support from stallion owners from all over the country, and from Equitransfer (Dr Jose Davila) , in donating breedings and services to our silent auction, where we cleared over $28,000 in profit. A few stallion breedings are still available which will be advertised for sale for the remainder of this year. We were able to make money on the show again this year, which supports our yearly budget, even with having over $50,000 available in prize money for all the divisions. I thank all the Piedmont members for making our guests feel welcome in our region, which is one of the reasons so many of them return year after year, because they feel like they are appreciated here.

Another futurity year has passed, again successful in awarding prize money and having many outside participants. A number of new stallions were added at the last minute, two of which did not make the list in the show program and directory. These were Gioco de Ca'Grande, owned by Tony and Devoe Casagrande, and Hechizo de La Hacienda, owned by Kay Turner. They will be on all future stallion lists. Refer to the directory for the futurity list, which now includes over 70 wonderful Paso Fino Stallions. Please consider these stallions in your breeding plans. We hope to add some outside sponsors for the futurity program in order to increase the prize money next year, so any suggestions are welcome. Special thanks to Robbie Davis who coordinates the paperwork and the awarding of prize money to the futurity horses, a large job in itself.

One of my goals in being president is to increase the marketing of our region's horses, farms, and trainers. To that end, we are having a marketing meeting in July to discuss options and develop a plan. If any of you can contribute marketing expertise, or are willing to be helpful in implementation, please contact me. This is one of the most important projects we will develop this year, and can greatly affect the success of both the region and our individual members.

Our national show committee is requesting a donation to the silent auction for nationals of a basket full of goodies representing our region. I would appreciate any donations you can make that can be compiled into a wonderful gift for someone. If you have anything to contribute, please send to me our give to me at the youth show or the Columbia show in August. These items can be related to horses, Nascar, the mountains, Myrtle Beach, the Appalachians, etc, etc. Use your imagination!

For those of you selling horses, remember to fill out the paperwork for any new buyers to get a free one-year individual membership in Piedmont (as well as nationals). Invite them to participate in any of our events, make them feel welcome in our association. Give us their name(s) so that we can send them a membership directory. Your involvement could make the difference as to whether they stay with us or drift away from the breed or association. Our association is here to help and support us all. Please stay involved and help keep Piedmont PFHA one of the most active regions in the country.

Sincerely,
Milda Minter
Piedmont PFHA President

Piedmont PFHA All-Youth Celebration Show is July 30th -31st
Dates: July 30- 31, 2005, Great Smoky Mtn. Expo Center
The purpose of this All-Youth Paso Fino Show is to highlight the great competition by our youth in all areas of the showring. There will be all the regular PFHA youth classes, plus youth championships in all 5 divisions (fino, performance, pleasure, equitation, and horsemanship). We will also have all the regular PFHA specialty classes (versatility, trail, etc), fun classes, and game classes. There are classes for seasoned competitors as well as first-time riders.

One of the highlights of this show will be a clinic on Saturday evening after the show to instruct our youth riders how to prepare for the Youth Mundial (World Cup Show) that will be held in the US in 2006. Judges Carlos Tobon and another PFHA judge (pending) will conduct a practice class and then a clinic and will answer any questions and give pointers on how to compete in the Mundial. Riders who went to the 2004 Youth Mundial in Puerto Rico will be in attendance to help as well. This is an excellent opportunity for all youth to learn how the Mundial classes are handled and to prepare early for 2006 competition.

Watch for the show bill in the Paso Fino Horse World starting in the July issue or click here. Judges are Carlos Tobon and (pending judge) on Saturday (separate judging and placements), with Betsy McHugh and Larry Whitesell on Sunday (separate judging and placements). Piedmont's Website Ranks High in the Top Search Engines
Have you got a Paso Fino horse to sell or a stallion at stud and need to get the word out to people who might be interested? Doing a search where www.piedmontpasofino.org would be ranked when typing in the key words: "paso fino horses NC" came up with excellent ranking results in the Internet's top search engines. MSN had it listed as 3rd on page 1, Google had it listed as 5th on page 1, and Altavista had it listed as 12th and still on page one. Considering Piedmont doesn't pay for any priority listings, these are exceptional results. Many surfers will not go past the first page in doing hits. Piedmont's website fell on the first page of these widely used search engines. Now is the time to get your classified ads in for the next month. The ads stay online for an entire year. The rates are very cost competitive compared to other horse sites. See Piedmont's advertising page for rate information. There are members and non-member rates.

The Piedmont Classic Asheville Show Report
Where were YOU? Nestled in the rolling hills and green mountains of North Carolina lies Asheville the perfect setting for one of the Paso Fino World's best shows, the twenty third Annual Piedmont Classic Paso Fino Horse show. Amidst the display of outstanding performers, riders and trainers is a sincere welcoming atmosphere. Excitement, thrills, parties, awards and rewards are the schedule for each of the action
packed days.

There were approximately 600 horses for show and sales. More than twenty-five states were represented by bringing and showing horses. The warm up area stayed busy until the wee hours of the night getting ready for the daily competition. Over sixty five thousand dollars was awarded as prize money to winners of outstanding Paso Fino horses this was not including the futurity classes. There were eighty two futurity stallions making their offspring eligible for huge winnings in their competition area. For more information look on the web at: www.piedmontpasofino.org.

Thursday night we were serenaded, wined and dined under the colorful tents with a fiesta environment. The mingling of a good time, good friends and good food was had by all. As each day unfolded into another only with more excitement and anticipation. Many were sitting on their seats wondering and watching and cheering looking forward to the next challenge and happening.

Saturday there was much talk and anticipation of Dinner In The Dirt. This is a five star gala that looks like a black tie event with out the black tie, If you look closely you’ll see that the attendees were dressed casually. The arena had been transformed into the look of a fabulous eatery featuring filet mignon and all of the trimmings. After the attendees were seated, youth riders entered displaying colors of the various Paso Fino countries. The high light of the night was about to begin as the band entertained the diners. The lights were lowered and a spot light was aimed at the entrance of the arena. Twenty magnificent horses and horse women and horsemen entered one at a time with a planned choreography awing the audience. Since this was a competitive horse show it only would figure to award the best of show in the evenings choreographed performance. This award went to Derek Fernandez riding Hechizero de Mark El who was awarded a prize of five hundred dollars. It was a thrill that you could not imagine unless you experienced it first hand. A
comment was that this was more spectacular than the Lipizzaners.

Sunday was the last day of this super show. No one seemed in a hurry to be leaving and the day was more
relaxed than the usual last day. How better to end the show than every entry have a chance to win a new two horse trailer from Southern Star Feed and Trailer Sales. (Thank you Larry Herrington from Bunswick, GA.) I am sure that the winners Tony Casagrande and Pat Figureroa thank him as well.

It takes a huge amount of coordination and numerous volunteers along with paid staff to pull off an event of this caliber. Dwight and Marla Graber our hats are off to you for planning and executing such a fabulous show! ... Angela A. Dotson

Piedmont Youth Scholarship
A big thanks goes to Mr. Dick Miller, who graciously has funded a $1,000 scholarship to be awarded to a Piedmont youth at the 2006 Asheville show. Mr. Miller has been a great supporter of our show for several years and was so excited about the 2005 show and the youth scholarships that were awarded that he made this generous contribution to Dwight Graber, show chairman, so that a Piedmont youth could benefit directly. Watch for details later this year about how to apply for this scholarship.

Piedmont Pilot Mountain June Trail Ride Report
Piedmont members rode the Pilot Mountain Trail on June 25th. Members Linda Pierce, Nathan Harrington, Brenda & Melissa McCurry, Charles Minter, Julie Scott and Chrissy Anderson lead by trail coordinator Candace Link met to ride the Pilot Mt. Trail located off of US 52 north of Winston-Salem, NC. The day was hot and sunny but riding under the shade of the tree lined trail provided an enjoyable and comfortable ride.

The trail is considered moderate with hills and creeks and proved to be the perfect challenge for our seasoned and unseasoned horses and riders. Pasos once again proved that no matter the terrain, they are formidable mounts. Our base for the ride was in the middle of the trail, affording the opportunity to ride two sections. For the morning ride we headed north on the trail, returned for lunch then headed south. The favorite part of the ride was through the section of pine forest, perhaps because it was cooler or maybe the view of Pilot Mountain’s knob in the background. Because the trail is one way, we were able to enjoy a nice reprieve from the heat twice through this beautiful area. The Pilot Mt. Trail runs from the base of Mt. Pilot south to the Yadkin River. It connects on the north end of the trail with the Sauratown Mt. Trail that runs from Mt. Pilot to Hanging Rock State Park. Combined both trails offer 50+ miles of beautiful scenery over moderate terrain. For more information on Piedmont trail rides, contact Candace Link, Piedmont Trail Coordinator at pasolink@mns.com.

Southern States still gives Piedmont money back on every feed bag coupon that is sent in and for bulk deliveries, which supports the Piedmont Futurity. If you feed "bag" feed, please take the time to clip the coupon (in dotted lines) off the back of each bag. Thank you for taking the time to support the Futurity through this program.
Piedmont PFHA and Country Supply
Recently I was ordering supplies from Country Supply online and discovered that they have a "donation program" called Country Care, which donates a portion of a customer's payment to a non-profit group of the customer's choosing. So, I signed up the Piedmont Futurity as the non-profit group we can contribute to. We will get up to 5% of purchases back (excluding dewormers and shipping costs), much like a Discover Card gives cash back.

In order to participate, all you have to do is make an order with www.countrysupply.com and after you put in your credit card information, you will see a box for "Country Care Code." In this box you should type PiedmontFuturity" written without a space between words. Country Supply will tally our corresponding purchases and send us a check monthly to benefit the futurity program.

Any of you who have shopped through Country Supply probably know that their prices on grooming supplies, barn tools and supplies, and horse care items are the best around. Please consider using them if possible and remember to type "PiedmontFuturity" as your Country Care Code. Pass this along to any of your friends who shop for horse supplies and ask them to help us out by shopping at Country Supply.
Many thanks, Milda Minter

Piedmont Trail Ride News
Southeastern Equestrian Trails Conference
The 2005 Southeastern Equestrian Trails Conference is July 14-16 at the Radisson Hotel in High Point, NC. Anyone interested in trails should attend. More info can be found at: www.SoutheasternEquestrianTrails.com or www.nchorsecouncil.com.

Piedmont Trail Ride Requirements
You must be a Piedmont member or Trail Ride Member, and contact the Trail Ride Host prior to Trail Ride deadline to participate.

PFHA Trail Ride Calendar

The Trail Ride Calendar for 2005 includes all our favorite places to ride, plust a few new and exciting additions. Our goal is to offer rides in different areas of our Region so that all our membership can participate. Suggestions for locations are always welcome, so if you have a favorite place you would like to see us ride, please let me know so it can be added to our Calendar. Your trail ride chairman and trail bosses are planning wonderful rides all around the region. Our attempt is to have one ride per month. We are putting together a clinic on trail safety, trail training, and competitive trail riding for later in the year.
For those that are new to our Association, we try to offer rides to accommodate the needs of all our riders. Trails are selected for location and terrain that is geared toward the gaited horse. To ensure the enjoyment of all the riders, Trail Hosts generally lead two groups, those that prefer a slower pace and one for those that prefer a faster pace. The main goal is to arrive for lunch at the same time to enjoy fellowship with other riders.
The Trail Hosts listed on the Calendar of Events have graciously accepted the responsibility for leading rides at locations they often ride. If you plan to participate in that ride, you will need to contact the Host so they can obtain a head count for the ride and food. Some rides are in locations where food is not nearby and will require you to pack a lunch. If the ride requires a packed lunch, your Trail Host will inform you to bring your lunch, a dish for potluck, or tell you food is provided.
If you plan to participate in a Piedmont Ride you must be a Piedmont member. Membership is an insurance requirement for designated Piedmont Rides. For non-members and/or members that may have guests that want to come ride, we do offer a one-time Trail Ride Membership for $10.00 per person You must contact the host with your name(s) of the people riding and a telephone number where you can be reached. Your Trail Host will need this information to verify your membership and so you can be contacted in the event the ride has to be cancelled due to weather or other reasons.

Trail Etiquette

Be a courteous trail rider. If you horse kicks, please tie a red ribbon its tail so others will know to stay clear. If you are riding a stallion, please ride in front of the group so as not to annoy mares. Do not run up on horses from behind trying to catch up or take off in front without warning those around you first. Pay attention to your Trail Host instructions! Remember, you are there to make sure everyone has a good safe ride.
Ideas for Trail Ride Involvement
If you know the trails at the host location, offer to help your Trail Host lead a group. Often we have those that prefer to go slow or are on a young horse and prefer a smaller group. Also, if we have more than 10 horses, it is nice to split into smaller groups to ride and meet back at an allotted time and location. Coordinate with you Host to help lead a group.
Offer to help with food: Not everyone rides or prefers to ride as long as the trail may be. If you are a short-ride person, or a non-rider who has tagged along to enjoy the day, ask your host what you can do while the others are riding, volunteer to set up tables, pick up ice, drinks and food.
Things you need to bring: Lawn chairs. Shovel and/or poop-scooper. Leave no trace at all facilities so we may continue to ride there.

We have some new and exciting places to ride this year. Hope to see you there. Happy Trails!
Candace Link, Trail Ride Coordinator, (336) 940-2936 pasolink@msn.com
PFHA Trail Ride Calendar
If you know of any trail rides your region is sponsoring, tell your region you want them submitted to the PFHA. If they are submitted to the PFHA they will be listed on the web site, in the magazine, on E-News and in Association information packets for FREE. That means more people will attend and if you would like to participate in other trail programs provided by the PFHA (Ticket to Ride, Pleasure Trail, Endurance Trail, Competitive Trail) you can use these rides as sanctioned trail rides.
Trail Riding Buddies
If anyone would like to be a Riding Buddy, or if you want a Buddy to ride in a Park you are interested in exploring, please let us know! Remember to be courteous enough to give all these folks at least a day or two’s notice! If anyone else would like to volunteer to be a Riding Buddy, or if you want a Buddy to ride in a Park you are interested in exploring, please let me know so I can put the information in the Newsletter. Ticket to Ride PFHA Program
Updated The Ticket to Ride is completely free to participate in for PFHA members. Members will complete a "ticket", which can be downloaded from the PFHA website or requested by contacting PFHA. Once the ticket is complete it is returned to the PFHA to be eligible for drawings that will take place at the Grand National Championship Show. You do not have to be present to win. You must be a member of the PFHA at the time of all rides and at the time of the drawings.

A member can complete as many tickets as they wish. The more tickets a member completes the better their chances are for the drawing. The tickets will be held at the PFHA until time for the drawings. The ticket has five spaces to have completed before the ticket can be returned to the PFHA. Every time you participate in a PFHA sanctioned trail ride it will count for two rides. A non PFHA sanctioned ride is worth one ride. You may use organized trail rides (must have a Ride Manager and be advertised) or any other event you participate in with your registered Paso Fino. Backyard pleasure riding/exercising can not be used for the Ticket to Ride program. Have the ride manager initial the spaces and sign off on the back of the ticket.

Last year we had Pasos shown in the Cross Rails class, a couple of the English Equitation classes (a few first places there by the way!), Pole Bending and Barrel Racing. However, classes 19 and 21 (which are Saddle seat classes) are the two that are predominantly, some months exclusively Paso Fino now! It really is a great show for beginners, students, as a "dress rehearsal" show for young or green horses, or a fun and inexpensive way to show in a very relaxed, family atmosphere! We hope to see lots of Piedmont Paso Finos at the next show!

USEF News

USEF Safe Rule Changes at Recognized Competitions
Lexington, KY - Consistent with one of the primary missions of the United States Equestrian Federation, which is to ensure the safety and welfare of both horses and riders, two important rule changes were approved at the annual meeting of the Board of Directors held in Louisville, Kentucky on January 16th, 2005. These changes should significantly contribute to safety at recognized USEF competitions. They involve the operation of motorized vehicles on horse show grounds by minors and the standards for safety helmets to be used in jumping competitions.

The first change was to rule GR301.5.a. The Board voted that beginning April 1st, 2005 minors who do not have a valid driver’s license which allows them to operate a motorized vehicle in the state in which they reside, will not be permitted to operate a motorized vehicle on the grounds of a recognized competition. This includes, but is not limited to, golf carts, motorcycles, scooters and farm utility vehicles. Penalties may include exclusion of the child, parents, guardians, and/or trainers from the competition grounds for the remainder of the competition and charges being filed against any of these individuals in accordance with Chapter VI. (Wheelchairs and other mobility assistance equipment for people with disabilities are exempt.)

The second rule change unanimously passed by the Board was GR318 which pertains to the use of approved safety helmets by everyone, juniors and seniors, competing over fences.
The Paso Fino Horse Association requested that the Board add to this rule that approved helmets be worn in all Paso Fino classes requiring jumping, and by all sub-juniors (exhibitors under 12 years of age) at all times when riding on the competition grounds of a Paso Fino show. The Board approved this addition.

NEW For Equine Hurricane Awareness and Preparation Information
Go to on the web: http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/an_sci/extension/horse/hurrican.htm

Horse Health Awareness. Protect your horse from diseases like Rabies (spread by wild animals, vaccinate once a year); Sleeping Sickness/EEE (spread by mosquitoes, vaccinate twice a year); West Nile Virus (spread by mosquitoes, vaccinate twice a year).

Interstate Health Permit
Horse owners who frequently travel out of state with their animals for horse shows and festivals can take advantage of a new agreement between the Southern states that will eliminate the need to obtain monthly animal Health Certificates. The agreement between Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia will allow horse owners to apply for an Equine Event Permit that will be good for up to six months in any of the listed states. Some states had reciprocal agreements in the past, but this is the first agreement of its kind in the South.

To receive a permit, North Carolina horse owners must send proof of negative Coggins test and Certificate of Veterinary Inspection along with an application and a $5 processing fee for each animal to the NC State Veterinarian. Owners must also submit proof of permanent identification, which includes tattoos, brands, microchips or digital photos showing the left and right sides, as well as a frontal view, of the horse. The issued permit will be good for six months, unless the Coggins test expires beforehand. Owners will still be required to carry the Coggins information and original Health Certificate with them when they travel. Owners will also be required to travel with a microchip reader if the equine is identified by microchip.

The application and more information about the Permit can be downloaded at the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Veterinary Division website, www.ncagr.com/vet/ or by calling (919) 733-7601.
