Congratulations to Hechicera PM, the 2004 PFHA High Point Horse
Hechicera PM, owned by Piedmont members Bill Minter of Lexington, NC, Paul "Woody" Mercer of McArthur, OH and Alan Dwayne Tilley of Winston Salem, NC, was awarded the 2004 Paso Fino Horse Association High Point Horse of the Year during the 2004 PFHA Grand National Championship Show in Perry, GA, September 19 - 25. The PFHA High Point Horse of the Year is the horse that accumulates the highest number of total points in all recognized classes at PFHA sanctioned shows during the course of the show year, with the exception of the Nationals.

Bill Minter stated: “Hechicera PM was one of the most naturally talented horses we have owned and shown. She has proven herself this year by winning 2 National Championships under saddle and 6th National Champion Bella Forma mare at our national show. The 2004 High Point Horse was the icing on the cake."

Congratulations to Ponderosa Coloso, 2004 PFHA Top Ten #4 Sire
Piedmont's Ponderosa Coloso, owned by Paul "Woody" Mercer and managed by Bill Minter, is honored to become # 4 on the PFHA Top Ten Sire list. What an accomplishment for this great stallion as this is his third consecutive appearance on this prestigious list. The top ten stallion list is a barometer to which stallions are measured for their ability to pass to their get the genetic attributes which enable them to compete on the very highest levels.

2004 PFHA #4 Top Ten Sire

Coloso’s offspring won 5 National high point titles in bella forma and pleasure divisions during 2004. There were many regional high point titles as well confirming Coloso offspring are very talented and admirably trainable to compete at such levels. Coloso won the Get of Sire National Championship for the third consecutive year against very stiff competition. Team Coloso won 8 National Championships and 3 Reserve National Championships both in bella forma and the pleasure and performance divisions, and the 2004 Breeders Sweepstakes. Coloso's daughter Hechicera PM also earned the 2004 Paso Fino Horse Association “Horse of the Year”.

The NC Horse Council Horse Judging Short Course is January 7-9, 2005 in Raleigh
This will be the first year that Paso Fino judging will be included. On Friday January 7, "Judging Paso Finos and Rocky Mountain Horses" will be instructed by Piedmont member and Judge Lynn Gallup of New Hill, NC in a one hour session. More Paso Finos are being exhibited at open horse shows; now there will be some constructive education to open horse show judges on what to look for. Along the same line, the Open Horse Show Judges Certification Clinic is February 5-6, 2005 in Raleigh. Course information can be found at: http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/an_sci/extension/horse/hhmain.html

New PFHW Regional News Reporter
Piedmont member Lori West has agreed to coordinate the Piedmont regional news column. She is working with a 60 day advance print deadline, so if you don't send it to Lori, it won't get printed. Members are reponsible for submitting member news and event reports for the PFHW Regional News, The Password Newsletter, and the Piedmont website E-News. See all deadlines for these publications under Notices below.

If you don't know Lori West, here is some background on her and her husband Greg. They have owned Paso Finos since 2001, thanks to Greg's Aunt Bonnie and Uncle Charles Minter, who along with Charlie and Milda Minter, introduced us to the breed. Since then, they've enjoyed learning, riding, watching, listening, and reading about Paso Finos. They enjoy participating in Piedmont events tremendously and have made many new friends. I look forward to helping Piedmont share in the PFHW how much fun we're all having! ...Lori West

Green Creek Heritage Days
Piedmont members Rita Magaha and Jeanne Griggs particpated in a Breed exhibition at the Green Creek Heritage Days Festival in Green Creek, NC. Rita's stallion Debonair Bravo and the beautiful mare Carmelita EZG were fantastic ambasadors for the breed. It looks like this will be an annual event due the success of the event in 2004.

Piedmont members will miss Russell Reid
Piedmont sends condolences to Sylvia Reid and her family, (long time Piedmont members) whose husband Russell Reid passed away on November 3, 2004 after a long illness. Russell, formerly an original member of Atlantic PFOBA, was able to attend the 2004 Nationals where his filly Cabrio RRR was awarded 2004 Reserve National Champion Bellas Formas Filly. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sylvia and her family.

Important Piedmont News Deadlines
Piedmont PFHA Website Deadlines
The 25th of each month will be the tentative deadline for getting new information to the webmaster with a target date around the1st of each month for page updates to be online. Email information in MS Word or notepad format if attachment or within the email message to Lynn Gallup webmaster email . News and Event photos should be sized to 72-100 dpi before emailing.

Paso Fino Horse World Regional News and Deadlines
From Lori West... Have you and your horse, your child or friend accomplished something you would like to see in print and share with the rest of our region? Did you have a great time at a Piedmont event, and would like to let others know what they missed? Would you like to encourage a new Paso Fino enthusiast publicly? If so, please send it to Lori West. I am asking each of you to help by providing news and photos.

Since I am an active exhibitor in the shows, I don't get to actually see many of the classes, and will not know about the highlights at these events unless each of you share them with me. Please, don't be shy, let us put your achievement in print. If you would like to be a "volunteer reporter" for the column, please let me know. I am not a reporter, but a coordinator, so please do not wait to be asked about your accomplishment, send it to me. The quality of the news that is published will be 100% dependent on you, our members and leadership, to take a much more proactive stance to make sure that the information you most want to see in the magazine gets in there. Let's show folks what fun we're having and why being a member of Piedmont is a great thing!
Paso Fino Horse World news specifics:

Deadline for submission of news for the Piedmont article is the first day of each month. There is a 60 day print publishing deadline, so early submission is essential. Photos can be scanned and emailed at 300 dpi resolution, or send prints to me with a stamped, self addressed envelope for their return. Most digital cameras by default take shots at only 72 dpi, not very good for printing. Please adjust your cameras to take the highest quality photo possible. Send news to: Lori West, 74 Gibbs Road, Leicester, NC 28748 or email to lorihwest@yahoo.com. Lori's phone: 828-683-1793; Fax: 425-963-5074.

Southern States Feed Program
Southern States still gives Piedmont money back on every feed bag coupon that is sent in and for bulk deliveries, which supports the Piedmont Futurity. If you feed "bag" feed, please take the time to clip the coupon (in dotted lines) off the back of each bag. Piedmont gets $.25 for Legends or Equitech bag and $.10 for every Reliance bag coupon submitted. Piedmont also gets credit for 50 lb. for bulk deliveries, so save the pink weight slip. All coupons and weight tickets can be turned in any time to Milda Minter, by mailing or giving them to her at any Piedmont event. Thank you for taking the time to support the Futurity through this program.

Piedmont PFHA and Country Supply
Recently I was ordering supplies from Country Supply online and discovered that they have a "donation program" called Country Care, which donates a portion of a customer's payment to a non-profit group of the customer's choosing. So, I signed up the Piedmont Futurity as the non-profit group we can contribute to. We will get up to 5% of purchases back (excluding dewormers and shipping costs), much like a Discover Card gives cash back.

In order to participate, all you have to do is make an order with www.countrysupply.com and after you put in your credit card information, you will see a box for "Country Care Code." In this box you should type "PiedmontFuturity" written without a space between words. Country Supply will tally our corresponding purchases and send us a check monthly to benefit the futurity program.

Any of you who have shopped through Country Supply probably know that their prices on grooming supplies, barn tools and supplies, and horse care items are the best around. Please consider using them if possible and remember to type "PiedmontFuturity" as your Country Care Code. Pass this along to any of your friends who shop for horse supplies and ask them to help us out by shopping at Country Supply.
Many thanks, Milda Minter

Piedmont Trivia Photo
Its long time Piedmont and original Atlantic PFOBA member Russell Reid on his Paso Fino Pedro for the Paso Fino Costume class at the Oak Ridge Easter Monday Horse Show in 1976. How many remember that one day show where you worked out of your horse trailer? Russell won National Champion in Costume twice. Russell also was PFHA member #842. Sadly, Russell passed away in November 2004. His friends and family will miss him.

Note: The trivia image above is scanned from an old 1976 slide, so is not the sharpest...but I wanted to pay tribute to Russell Reid with this Piedmont e-news edition...Lynn Gallup, webmaster.
